Objectives
Since apoptosis is considered to play a role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia the aim of this study was to examine the Fas and Fas ligand (FasL) system in patients with schizophrenia. FasL is transmembrane protein that induces apoptosis by binding to its specific receptor Fas. The Fas-FasL complex is an important effector of cell death in different cell types.
MethodsSerum Fas and FasL levels were determined in 30 patients with schizophrenia (11 females, 19 males), and 30 healthy controls (11 females, 19 males) by the ELISA method.
ResultsSerum Fas levels were significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia (4.63±0.96 ng/mL, p< 0.05) than in controls (4.12±0.81 ng/mL). A significant increase in FasL levels was also found in schizophrenic patients (0.099±0.029 ng/mL, p< 0.05) in comparison with those in healthy controls (0.085±0.023 ng/mL). Schizophrenic males showed significantly higher both Fas (4.97 ± 0.83 ng/mL, p< 0.05) and FasL (0.103 ± 0.032 ng/mL, p< 0.01) compared to the control males (4.30 ± 0.93 ng/mL; 0.079 ± 0.011 ng/mL, respectively). A significant positive correlation between patient serum FasL and lymphocyte caspase-3 activity was found.
ConclusionThese results clearly show a disregulated extrinsic apoptotic pathway in patients with schizophrenia.

In order to identify a patophysiological mechanism that could explain the progressive elements of schizophrenia and its relationship with neurodevelopment, oxidant stress, glutamate excitotoxicity, neurochemical sensitisation and a disregulation of apoptosis were considered.
To test apoptotic process in schizophrenia, Bcl-2 protein was determined in sera from 30 patients with schizophrenia and from 30 age and gender matched healthy subjects by an ELISA method. Although mean serum Bcl-2 protein concentration in patients with schizophrenia was lower than in healthy volunteers, there was no any significant difference between patient (0.276 ± 0.07 ng/mL) and control (0.332 ± 0.22 ng/mL) values. No significant difference was found between males and females. Similar Bcl-2 concentrations were obtained in the group showing almost equally positive and negative symptoms, in the group with a relative predomination of positive symptoms and in the group with a relative predomination of negative symptoms. Serum Bcl-2 protein concentration in patients treated with first generation antipsychotics was 0.301 ± 0.075 ng/mL, and it was significantly higher in comparison with the values obtained in patients receiving the second generation antipsychotics (0.233 ± 0.052 ng/mL, p< 0.05). A significant correlation was found between serum levels of Bcl-2 and FasL (r = 0.418, p < 0.01). There was not any significant correlation between serum Bcl-2 concentration and heredity, the first onset of the disease, the number of psychotic episodes and the duration of psychosis. To our knowledge to date, this has been the first demonstration of Bcl-2 concentration in sera of patients with schizophrenia, showing significantly different values between patients treated with typical or atypical antipsychotics.
Erythrocyte Superoxide Dismutase Activity is Higher in Younger Than in Older Schizophrenics

Introduction
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is the critical enzyme in the detoxification of superoxide radicals because those are the first species produced in the majority of biological free radical producing reactions. Inconsistent data are present about SOD activity in patients with schizophrenia.
AimsTo compare erythrocyte SOD activity in schizophrenic patients who were randomly selected, and separately in the subgroup of patients younger than 34 years.
MethodsThis study included 68 consecutive patients with schizophrenia (29 males and 39 females) mean age 32.7±9.4 years. The results of whole group were tested with 59 healthy controls and with the subgroup of patients younger than 34 years. SOD activity was measured in erythrocyte hemolysates by Ransod commercially available test.
ResultsWhen we tested the whole patient group SOD activity was not significantly different between the healthy controls and schizophrenics. In the subgroup of patients younger than 34 years SOD levels were significantly higher (1525±279 U/gHb, p<0.01) compared to corresponding control values (1349±191 U/gHb). In younger patients SOD activity was significantly higher in those suffering up to five years (1617±286 U/gHb, p<0.001), in those who had more than one episode (1588±435 U/gHb, p<0.001), as well as in heredity positive (1581±324 U/gHb, p<0.01), and heredity negative patients (1532±262 U/gHb, p<0.05) in comparison with controls. A significant negative correlation was found between the duration of the disease and SOD activity (r=-0.511, p<0.01).
ConclusionOur results showed that SOD activity is significantly increased in the early phase of the disease, and then declined to control values.

Background
Health anxiety is an under-recognised but a frequent cause of distress. It is particularly common in general hospitals.
MethodsWe carried out an 8-year follow-up of medical out-patients with health anxiety (hypochondriasis) enrolled in a randomised-controlled trial in five general hospitals in London, Middlesex and Nottinghamshire. Randomisation was to a mean of six sessions of cognitive behaviour therapy adapted for health anxiety (CBT-HA) or to standard care in the clinics. The primary outcome was a change in score on the Short Health Anxiety Inventory, with generalised anxiety and depression as secondary outcomes. Of 444 patients aged 16–75 years seen in cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology and respiratory medicine clinics, 306 (68.9%) were followed-up 8 years after randomisation, including 36 who had died. The study is registered with controlled-trials.com, ISRCTN14565822.
ResultsThere was a significant difference in the HAI score in favour of CBT-HA over standard care after 8 years [1.83, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.25–3.40, p = 0.023], between group differences in generalised anxiety were less (0.54, 95% CI −0.29 to 1.36), p = 0.20, ns), but those for depression were greater at 8 years (1.22, 95% CI 0.42–2.01, p < 0.003) in CBT-HA than in standard care, most in standard care satisfying the criteria for clinical depression. Those seen by nurse therapists and in cardiology and gastrointestinal clinics achieved the greatest gains with CBT-HA, with greater improvement in both symptoms and social function.
ConclusionsCBT-HA is a highly long-term effective treatment for pathological health anxiety with long-term benefits. Standard care for health anxiety in medical clinics promotes depression. Nurse therapists are effective practitioners.

We comment on the proposition “that lower temperatures and especially greater seasonal variation in temperature call for individuals and societies to adopt … a greater degree of self-control” (Van Lange et al., sect. 3, para. 4) for which we cannot find empirical support in a large data set with data-driven analyses. After providing greater nuance in our theoretical review, we suggest that Van Lange et al. revisit their model with an eye toward the social determinants of self-control.

This article aims to explore the microfoundations of political support under a nondemocratic regime by investigating the impact of a natural disaster on attitudes toward the government. The research exploits the enormous wildfires that occurred in rural Russia during the summer of 2010 as a natural experiment. The authors test the effects of fires with a survey of almost eight hundred respondents in seventy randomly selected villages. The study finds that in the burned villages there is higher support for the government at all levels. Most counterintuitively, the rise of support for authorities cannot be fully explained by the generous governmental aid. The authors interpret the results by the demonstration effect of the government's performance.

Effect of gut active carbohydrates on plasma IgG concentrations in piglets and calves

Improving immune status in neonates is crucial to health and production. Gut active carbohydrates (GAC) have been associated with increasing immunoglobin levels and immonucompetence development in mammals. The objective of the following studies was to evaluate whether GAC (mannan-oligosaccharides) applied orally to progeny immediately following parturition, improved blood plasma immunoglobulin (Ig) type G concentrations in piglets and calves. Three trials were conducted comparing control groups with those receiving GAC orally. The first two trials used piglets that were monitored for blood IgG at 2 days of age and for changes in body weight (BW), and the third trial monitored calf IgG from birth to 21 days of age. Piglets in the experimental group received 0.75 g GAC in 10 ml saline at birth and 24 h of age. The calf trial compared the control group against calves that received 22.5 g GAC mixed into 4.5 l of colostrum (to give 5 g/l) in the first 24 h after parturition. Blood serum samples were taken at 2 days post partum in piglets, and at several time points from 6 h to 21 days of age in calves, and were analysed for IgG levels by radial immunodiffusion. In the first piglet trial, significantly higher levels (32%) of IgG were observed for piglets fed GAC (P < 0.001), and in the second, IgG concentration was elevated by 23% (P < 0.01) and BW increased by 9% (P = 0.023) with GAC supplementation. Significant improvements for calves were recorded at all time points in those fed GAC (P < 0.05), with an increase in serum IgG observed after the first day, which was maintained throughout the sampling period, resulting in a difference of 39% at the end of the trial (21 d). These findings form a basis for further studies, which are required to investigate possible modes of action involved in enhancing blood immunoglobulin concentrations in young animals, and the longer-term effects this may have on the development of the immune response.

We report a new method of Thin Crystal Film deposition. In the present paper we describe the method of crystallization, structure, and optical properties of Bisbenzimidazo[2,1-a:1',2',b']anthra[2,1,9-def:6,5,10-d'e'f']-diisoquinoline-6,9-dion (mixture with cis-isomer) (abbreviated DBI PTCA) sulfonation product. The Thin Crystal Film has a thickness of 200-1000 nm, with anisotropic optical properties such as refraction and absorption indices. X-ray diffraction data evidences a lyotropic liquid crystalline state in liquid phase and crystalline state in solid film. Anisotropic optical properties of the film make it useful in optical devices, e.g. liquid crystal displays.
